China-based Sunny Optical Technology, Shenzhen O-film Tech and Truly Opto-electronics have been expanding production capacities for compact camera modules (CCMs) for smartphones and tablets, according to sources with Taiwan's supply chain.
Sunny Optical saw above 5-megapixel models take up over 70% of total smartphone CCM shipments and generate revenues of CNY3.836 billion (US$622 million) and net profit of CNY254 million in first-half 2014, increasing on year by 37.7% and 30.2% respectively, the sources said. Sunny had a monthly CCM production capacity of 24 million units at the end of 2013 and is expanding the capacity.
O-film has finished development of 13-megapixel CCM models and established a monthly production capacity of 10 million units, with China-based smartphone vendors Lenovo and Xiaomi Technology being major clients, the sources indicated. The company is expanding CCM production capacity and may surpass Sunny Optical to become the largest China-based CCM maker.
Truly, which ha 20 CCM production lines, is adding 10 more, with total monthly capacity to increase to 20 million units, the sources said. Truly has become a CCM supplier for Samsung and China-based vendor Oppo.
China-based CCM makers are expected to benefit from fast growing shipments by China-based smartphone vendors and bring pressure on Taiwan-based competitors, the sources indicated.
However, some Taiwan-based CCM makers think that they still have an upper hand in terms of technology for above 10-megapixel models for smartphones but will face increasing competition from China-based makers in the entry-level and mid-range smartphone segments in emerging markets.
