一艘向日葵狀的太空船可能可協助科學家，以前所未見的方式觀察像地球的外星世界。

太空與天文學新聞網站Space.com報導，這個向日葵狀的巨大太空船稱為「遮星板」（starshade），可在太空中開展到最大尺寸，阻擋遙遠恆星的光線，讓太空望遠鏡拍攝圍繞恆星周圍軌道的系外行星影像。

有了這項科技，研究人員可直接拍攝其他世界影像，或許能找到尋覓已久的另一個地球，而這對外星搜尋者來說一向是困難的任務。

雖然還在初期發展階段，這面遮星板可拍到鄰近明亮恆星的小型行星。這將能協助科學家得知更多有關行星的資訊，甚至藉由仔細觀察外星世界的大氣，尋找可能的生命跡象。

美國麻省理工學院（MIT）天體物理學家兼行星科學家席格（Sara Seager）提到遮星板概念時說：「這是太空中非常特別的屏障。」

他說：「遮星板擋住恆星光線，只有行星光線能射進望遠鏡，這與傳統方式迥異。傳統上，望遠鏡包辨全部任務。…這是以相對較小且簡單的太空望遠鏡尋找類地球行星的唯一方法。」1030325
