所謂鰭式場效電晶體，是新的多重閘極3D電晶體，電晶體的閘極環繞包裹著電晶體的高架通道，因為形狀與魚鰭相似才以此命名。鰭式場效電晶體與傳統的平面型電晶體相較，可提供更佳功耗和效能。

鰭式場效電晶體的架構中，閘門成類似魚鰭的3D架構，可更妥善控制電流，降低耗電。依照台積電的發展藍圖，是規劃發展16奈米FinFET；三星、格羅方德、聯電與英特爾等，則是切入14奈米FinFET製程。
