『株連法』亦稱『連坐法』，即一人犯罪，全家人甚至親友都被一起懲罰，是封建帝王藉以鎮壓反對者，鞏固統治地位的專政手段。株連法原於奴隸社會末期。

根據文博網報導，先秦時的《尚書•泰誓》已有記載：『罪人以族。』也就是說，一人有罪，刑及整個家族。《尚書•堯典》說得更明白：『以罪九族。』九族指的是高祖、曾祖、祖父、父、本身、子、孫、曾孫及玄孫九代之族。如春秋時晉滅欒氏九族、楚滅慶封九族等。

後來，從秦開始有了『滅三族』的記載。如秦王子嬰『三族（趙）高家以徇咸陽』；漢高祖劉邦殺韓信並『夷信三族』等，這『三族』可比『九族』株連更廣，因為九族只限同姓本家，而三族卻包括了異姓親屬（親戚）在內。如父母之族，旁及叔伯家、姑家、舅家等；兄弟之族，旁及岳父家及兒女親家等等。這樣歷朝相襲，愈演愈烈，到了封建社會晚期的明清兩代，已經登峰造極。
