蓋特納--金融危機時期最高層政府官員之一--周二在聽證會上表示，他認為如果不為AIG公司紓困，可能會有災難性的後果。

當AIG接近倒閉時，蓋特納擔任紐約Fed銀行總裁。他於周二上午與著名訴訟律師David Boies，展開了逾一個小時的攻防。這次案件是在調查，政府於2008年為AIG紓困，是否詐欺了股東400億美元。

代表股東的Boies反複問道，蓋特納是否認為AIG倒閉將會有災難性的後果，蓋特納說是。Boies還就聯邦貸款貸予其他公司的條件，詢問蓋特納。股東認為該紓困案非法，欲懲罰AIG。蓋特納則說，他不記得明確的利率或其他細節。

蓋特納在拯救AIG行動中，扮演要角。在紓困中，政府取得AIG的79.9%股權，以提供850億美元擔保貸款。

這項紓困案--AIG已全數償還--最終擴大到1846億美元，政府股權上升至92%。
