由於被棄養的兔子數量倍增，美國紐約市決定採用與芝加哥、洛杉磯和舊金山相同措施，禁止售賣寵物兔。紐約市議會17日表決通過禁止販售寵物兔，該法還需等市長簽署即生效。

資料顯示，被棄養的兔子數量2012年為300隻，今年則有600隻，動物收容所已經過度擁擠，動保人員表示飼養兔子並非如想像中簡單，因此很多人一時興起購買，最後都棄養。不過這條法規並不禁止人們飼養兔子，單是限制販賣兔子。

紐約市還通過了一項額外措施，禁止商販間接從寵物繁殖場購買貓狗，並且寵物商店在賣寵物之前要先進行結紮手術，並確保每一個寵物都有屬於自己的身份證件。（國際中心／綜合外電報導）
